4 Reasons To Choose Painted Kitchen Cabinets

Posted on: 24 October 2019

When the time comes to choose cabinets for your kitchen, you have a few decisions to make. One of those decisions is whether to go with a natural finish, or whether to opt for paint. While a natural finish does create a certain look that appeals to some homeowners, painted cabinets have some distinct advantages. Here are four key reasons why you may want painted cabinets for your kitchen:

1. They are easier to keep clean.

When painting cabinets, builders typically use paint with what's known as a satin finish. This makes the paint less likely to grab onto anything that is spilled on it. As a result, the cabinets are easy to clean. You can wipe away any stains or spills with mild soap and water, or with a microfiber cloth. Wood cabinets with a natural finish are not as easy to clean and may require more scrubbing, but in scrubbing hard enough to remove the stains, you may also damage the finish.

2. They tend to be cheaper.

Paint hides a lot. As such, when the builders make your cabinets, they won't have to spend as long sanding and making sure the cabinets are perfectly smooth before applying the paint. They will sand them to a nice, soft finish, but not as thoroughly as they would if you were to choose a natural finish, which shows every tiny imperfection in the wood. Since this saves your contractor time, they are likely to charge you less for painted cabinets than for ones with a natural finish.

3. You can refinish them yourself.

Applying natural finishes to wood takes a great degree of skill. Each natural finish needs to be applied a little differently and via different methods. Unless you're a trained carpenter, you probably don't want to get into this, so you're unlikely to refinish natural cabinets yourself. Paint is another story. It's easy to apply, even if you have very little DIY experience. If you one day decide you want to change the color scheme of your kitchen, you can repaint the cabinets yourself.

4. You can create a bold look.

Natural wood never really looks bold. It's beautiful, but not loud and assertive. Paint can be. If you want to create a dramatic look in your kitchen, painted cabinets are really the only way to go. From lime green to navy blue, you can choose any color you like.
